Police arrested a burglar before the crime was reported in Dunedin, much like the 2002 Hollywood movie 'Minority Report', starring Tom Cruise.

A burglar has been nabbed red-handed – before police even knew there had been a crime.

Officers in a passing patrol car saw the "suspicious man" running along a grass verge in the Dunedin suburb of Kaikorai about 5am on Saturday, Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield said.

The man fled into a "scrub area", but was quickly nabbed by police who recovered a backpack full of stolen power tools.

Those stolen items were from a home in nearby County Rd. The residents were unaware they had been burgled.

The man was charged with burglary and was remanded in custody.

When asked if police were solving crimes before they happened, like the plot of the Hollywood blockbuster Minority Report, Butterfield said "not yet".

However, he praised the officers for their "great police work".
