Two thieves have robbed a bus driver in Hamilton.

The robbery unfolded as dawn broke on Rotokauri Rd around 6.30am on Wednesday.

The pair, described as opportunists, saw a chance to nab some cash and took it.

"Two people came onto the bus and grabbed some cash - they had a wrestle over the cash box with the driver and ran away," Waikato police Senior Sergeant Pete Simpson said.

Simpson said the pair fled with an amount of cash and police were looking to track them down.

There were no reported injuries to the bus driver.

This is the second time in two weeks a bus driver has been robbed on Rotokauri Rd.

On August 28 two men, one in a red and another in a black mask, armed with a hammer jumped aboard a bus on the Monday evening.

Their target was the cash box, which they took from the Go Bus in Rotokauri Road about 7.30pm.
