Coronavirus: The Book of Mormon cancelled at Auckland's Civic Theatre

  

The remaining season of The Book of Mormon at Auckland's Civic Theatre has been cancelled.  

The New Zealand leg of the satirical musical was due to run from March 6 until April 26. Tonight's show, due to begin at 7.30pm was sold out.

Yesterday afternoon, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a ban to gatherings of over 500 people to try and limit exposure to coronavirus.

On Tuesday afternoon, Auckland Live shared the update to their website, saying the March 15 show would be the last performance in New Zealand. 

As of 12.30pm on Tuesday, Auckland Live were yet to make an official announcement, saying producers in Australia needed to "digest the information", directing Stuff to updates on their website. They said Ticketmaster would send an email to those with tickets.

Capacity of the Civic Theatre is 2,378.

Hilary Barry weighed in to the conversation on social media about the delay, sharing a Tweet from a person who planned to fly up from Wellington for tonight's show scheduled for 7.30pm tonight. 

Many other events in New Zealand have been cancelled as the country grapples to keep the spread of coronavirus in check, including scheduled gigs by My Chemical Romance, Alanis Morissette and Violent Femmes.

Auckland Writers Weeks has been cancelled, as have Wellington festivals Homegrown and  Cupadupa, Auckland secondary school Pasifika festival Polyfest, and a raft of others.
