A person flown to hospital with critical injuries after truck crash near Murchison
A 40-year-old male has been flown to Wellington Hospital in critical condition following an accident involving two trucks on State Highway 65, south of Murchison.
The accident occurred between Maruia Saddle Road and Pea Soup Road about 7am on Tuesday.
The road is part of the alternate highway from Picton to Christchurch following the Kaikoura quake.
The New Zealand Transport Agency said drivers on the Alternate Route between Picton and Christchurch would be detoured to Reefton this morning and possibly this afternoon. The road was likely to open to one lane on Tuesday evening, NZTA said.
The detour adds another hour-and-a-half to the overall journey.
State Highway 65 was closed and traffic was being diverted at O'Sullivans Bridge onto State Highway 6.
Police initially said one person was trapped and was reported to have sustained critical injuries in the truck crash.
The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter flew the 40 year old male to Wellington Hospital, another person with moderate injuries was transported to hospital by St John Ambulance.
The road was expected to remain blocked for some time.
