A melting pot of fashion influenced by art and nature came to the fore in a fashion show by design students in Invercargill last night.

Close to 300 people packed the carpark basement of SIT Downtown to catch a glimpse of local fashion talent at the catwalk show, in a first for the fashion and design students in the city.

Show spokeswoman Emma Cathcart said planning for the show began about two months ago, with the idea being to showcase the student's work in a public forum.

About 30 fashion and design certificate and diploma students contributed pieces for the event, which drew on fashion and future trends in the industry from art, architecture and the natural world.

The show was a first for SIT, which had only been offering the diploma course for a short time.

Given all went to plan, it could become a regular event on SIT's calendar, she said.
