Next week several of our school sports coordinators will be attending the South Island sports coordinators conference in Christchurch.

This is offered only every two years and alternates with a North Island Sports coordinators conference.

Around 140 delegates representing the majority of South Island secondary schools will be attending.

The conference will start on Sunday night with a dinner and continue through till Tuesday afternoon.

Delegates have the option of choosing from a variety of workshops offered throughout the course of the conference.

Topics cover a wide range of issues/topics such as the very topical health and safety, time management, influencing young people's sports choices, website development, data systems, best practice participation ideas, assessment of sports planning, conflict management, promoting positive side line behaviour, volunteers and coaching ,running events and talent development etc .

So there are relevant workshops to cover all school types.

One of the key positives is the opportunity for sports coordinators to network and share ideas in a formal or informal situation.

Many work in isolation so will enjoy a chance to mix with others.

The opportunity for this professional development is invaluable and should be supported by schools.

A sports practical will take place Monday afternoon where delegates get to take part in a practical session choices ranging from Ki O Rahi, Play and Pickup game, Fencing, Ultimate Frisbee, sportsmart warm ups and physical conditioning programmes and golf croquet.

Sports coordinators should be able to go away with new ideas and information with the intention of implementing these within their school.

This conference will be followed by one for the regional sports directors'.

The linking of the two conferences helps with addressing immediate issues /ideas that have arisen and developing pre planning for the 2018 year.
