Tommy Smith is facing six weeks on the sideline with a hamstring injury.

All Whites defender Tommy Smith is likely to miss their World Cup qualifying matches against the Solomon Islands due to injury.

Smith injured his hamstring while playing for English Championship club Ipswich Town on Sunday morning (NZ Time) and will be out for six to eight weeks, which Ipswich confirmed on its website.

"Gutted to pick up this hamstring injury," Smith posted on Twitter. "I'll be working as hard as I can to come back and help the lads as soon as possible.

"Thanks for all the well wishes so far. We've had a good start, let's keep the momentum going on Tuesday and beyond."

The home-and-away tie against the Solomon Islands begins at QBE Stadium in Auckland on September 1, then continues at Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara on September 5.

Smith picked up the injury in Ipswich's 2-1 win over Barnsley and joins a full injury ward at the club.

Ipswich have made an unbeaten start to the season with two wins in the Championship and a win in the League Cup.
