Hay, a former All Whites captain and current New Zealand under-17 coach, said the role at Eastern Suburbs "fitted perfectly" with his ambitions to further test himself as a coach, having spent 10 years in the school arena with Sacred Heart College.

Eastern Suburbs were the best performing expansion side last season, finishing fifth place with a record of nine wins, three draws and six defeats.
