Chris Wood's new teammate bags hat-trick on Leeds United debut in EFL Cup victory
All Whites striker Chris Wood watched from the bench as new team-mate Samu Saiz bagged a hat-trick on debut in Leeds United's 4-1 victory over Port Vale on Wednesday (Thursday NZ time).
The Spanish midfielder opened the scoring after 12 minutes in the EFL Cup tie at Elland Road before Port Vale, who play in League Two (England's fourth tier), equalised through former Leeds midfielder Michael Tonge.
Saiz, an off-season signing from Spanish club SD Huesca, then scored twice on the hour before striker Caleb Ekuban scored Leeds' fourth after 83 minutes.
Vale's Gavin Gunning saw red in the final minutes after collecting his second yellow card as All Whites captain Wood wasn't risked with Leeds playing Preston North End in the Championship on Saturday (Sunday morning NZ time).
Wood scored for Leeds in their 3-2 victory over Bolton Wanderers last weekend on the opening day of their season after finishing as the West Yorkshire club's top scorer in their last campaign, with 30 goals in 48 matches.
