Right people, right environment make getting fit fun
Maintaining a rewarding work, life and fitness balance doesn't need to be a struggle when you're surrounded by the right people.
Teresa Greenhill said from the minute she walked into Ki Whanau Gym, IronMaori Hawera, she knew she had found her new home of fitness.
"At first I was freaking out.
"I thought the beginners' spin class was going to be really hard, because my fitness was so pathetic.
"I couldn't have been more wrong - I just loved it."
Designed to motivate people off the couch, the half-hour class is about nurturing and supporting those returning to, or starting, their fitness journey.
Greenhill said the spin class was the perfect introduction to the gym's family-based, non-judgmental environment.
"It was really neat going along and seeing everyone, no matter their fitness level, putting in their all.
"You don't have to worry about what people are going to think, it's such a supportive environment.
"It's such a cool feeling - it's a feeling of belonging."
Greenhill said the gym's pay as you go system also fit perfectly with any working parent.
"I didn't want to belong to the typical gym where you have to pay every week and there is all that pressure.
"Here, it's very easy for me to slot it in when I can and it's very affordable at $4 a class for spin.
"And now I have a second family."
Now, Greenhill is now eyeing new challenges. She said being surrounded by so many like-minded and incredibly motivating people inspires her to push herself further.
"I want to step it up and go to more classes."
Spin Classes run through Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5.30pm and the Beginners' Spin Class runs every Wednesday at 6pm.
