A man is believed to have been injured when he fell into the Tongaporutu River in North Taranaki.

A man has been taken to hospital after falling into a North Taranaki river.

Acting Sergeant Craig O'Doherty said the man slipped down a bank and into the Tongaporutu River about 12.50pm.

Police and ambulance staff along with the Taranaki Community Rescue Helicopter were called to the scene, near Ahititi, but the man managed to get himself out of the water.

O'Doherty said it was believed the man had broken his leg or hip in the fall.

Taranaki Rescue Helicopter crewman Andy Cronin said they were called to the scene around lunchtime but had trouble locating the man as he was hidden by trees.

He said they were eventually able to locate the person who had raised the alarm, who led them to where the man was.

They then winched a medic down to the man before winching them both up and flying the man to Taranaki Base Hospital.
