Car down bank, bleeding man 'legs' it from scene

A car went off the road on Centennial Drive in New Plymouth.

Police are searching for a man who abandoned a car after it smashed through a fence and tumbled down a bank in New Plymouth.

About 3.10pm on Wednesday a vehicle left the road on Centennial Drive. Moments later a man was seen fleeing the scene.

New Plymouth Police senior constable Grant Kennard said witnesses saw the man, who was bleeding, get into another car and take off following the incident.

Police are still searching for driver who fled the scene.

"He's just legged it."

Kennard said police were running a check to see if the crashed vehicle was stolen.

A bystander at the crash site said he had seen the man run up the bank and "shoot off."

Fire and ambulance were also at the scene.

Kennard said the vehicle would be eventually towed and police would continue to search for the driver.
