Police were called to the scene around 9pm on Tuesday.

Reports of gun shots in the small rural Taranaki town of Kaponga on Tuesday night turned out to be a home owner doing some DIY.

A police spokeswoman said a neighbour had alerted them to what appeared to be gun shots from a house on Egmont St about 9pm.

She said police attended the scene and a drunk man came out of the house on his own.

Acting Sergeant David Lee said it appeared the man had been doing some renovations in his barn using a nail gun.

The man held a firearms licence but police removed his guns for the night, Lee said.

"There was no issue with firearms but anything dangerous was taken away for the night."
