Free bus rides get people out of cars in New Plymouth
A drive to see more people using public transport has seen the Taranaki Regional Council offer free bus travel.
As part of World Car Free Day, the Taranaki Regional Council offered its Connector, South Link and most of its Citylink routes for free on Friday.
Mike Nield, director of corporate services, said it was a chance for people who would usually drive to work or the supermarket to try taking public transport instead.
"We find that if people give it a go, they realise its a pretty good service," he said.
With 614,815 rides given in total last year, he said the idea of using the bus was slowly growing and as more people started taking it, they would be able to add more routes.
"We're quite proud of the service we provide," he said.
