Ex takes her revenge on Mr Wikipedia
Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales is facing public humiliation after he apparently used the site to break-up with girlfriend and Canadian TV personality Rachel Marsden.
Marsden, who plead guilty to criminally harassing a boyfriend in 2004, possesses reportedly saucy instant message transcripts with Wales and is now auctioning off his clothes on eBay.
The bitter backlash came after Wales announced in a statement on Wikipedia that he was "no longer involved with" Marsden and had only met her in person for the first time in February this year.
Marsden told The Canadian Press that "[i]t didn't really help matters that Jimmy chose to announce the breakup to the entire world via Wikipedia".
The pair reportedly started dating after Wales personally helped Marsden clean up her Wikipedia entry in 2006, which she claimed was wrong and libellous.
"Rachel Marsden first approached me via email two years ago with complaints about her bio," Wales wrote.
"I subsequently reviewed her bio and I found it not to be up to our standards. My involvement in cases like this is completely routine, and I am proud of it."
Marsden responded to the "break-up" by putting what she said was a t-shirt and sweater owned by Wales up for sale on eBay, with a starting price of 99 US cents each.
The medium black "Starter" t-shirt has two white stains, while the medium sweater is also black and branded "Pronto-Uomo". The eBay listings show Marsden modelling both.
"Hi, my name is Rachel and my (now ex) boyfriend, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, just broke up with me via an announcement on Wikipedia," Marsden wrote in the eBay description.
"It was such a classy move that I was inspired to do something equally classy myself, so I'm selling a couple of items of clothing he left behind, here in my NYC apartment, on eBay. Jimbo was supposed to come visit me in a couple of weeks and pick up some of his stuff, but obviously that won't be happening now."
Marsden goes on in the description to attack Wales' cleanliness, saying the items had to be washed twice or they would not be in a saleable condition. They had been placed in "GitMo style isolation" in a plastic bag in her closet "to prevent the ongoing terrorism of my olfactory senses".
Silicon Valley gossip blog Valleywag, which broke the story of the Wales/Marsden relationship and has been following it since, published what it said were transcripts of instant messaging chats between the pair.
In one saucy transcript, Wales and Marsden plot a weekend getaway at a hotel in Washington D.C., which Marsden describes in another transcript as "24 hours of marathon sex".
"At this early/lusty/crazyhot stage, it is VERY challenging to go out in public with you and not be all over each other," Marsden allegedly wrote to Wales.
Another transcript shows Wales talking about his efforts designing a "google killing search engine so I can buy a jet". Marsden responded saying "so we have something else to have sex on", to which Wales replied with a smiley face emoticon.
Marsden, a Canadian who was fired from her job as a Fox News Channel commentator last year, was given one year's probation in 2004 for criminally harassing her boyfriend following their break-up.
