A man claiming to have a gun threatened staff and escaped with money from the Stanmore Rd Subway outlet on Monday night.

Two Christchurch businesses have been targeted by armed robbers in separate incidents on Monday night.

A man claiming to have a gun threatened staff and demanded money at a Subway sandwich outlet on Stanmore Rd in Linwood about 7.40pm, police said.

"He got the cash, an unknown amount, and ran off," Senior Sergeant Matt Tiernan​ said.

As well as the Subway robbery, police also attended an armed robbery at a TAB outlet in Spreydon.

Armed police responded and were interviewing staff and witnesses.

Just 40 minutes earlier, a man armed with a knife walked into the TAB outlet on Barrington St in Spreydon, Tiernan said.

"He took some cash and ran off towards Milton St.

No arrests had been made in either case, but the Criminal Investigation Branch was investigating.

Tiernan said the store was due to close at 7pm. An unknown amount of cash was taken.
