A teenager has been charged with the arson of a grandstand at Otago Boys' High School.

A teenager has been accused of setting fire to a grandstand at a Dunedin high school.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested on Friday and charged with arson after a fire at Otago Boys' High School on August 1.

He was bailed and would appear in the Dunedin Youth Court on Wednesday.

Detective Constable Reece Munro said the damage to the stand was minor.

"It could have been worse if not for the quick actions from members of the public who alerted Fire [and Emergency New Zealand], who responded immediately," he said in a statement.

"Police would like to thank local people and fire crews for their excellent response."

The boy was not a current student at the school.
