Scott Millar, 19, of Ranfurly, was critically injured in the crash that killed 19-year-old apprentice plumber Ravineel Sharma, of Alexandra.

The condition of a driver who was critically injured in a fatal Central Otago car crash has improved.

Millar had been driving the Nissan car he, Sharma and another 19-year-old were in when it crashed into a tree on Coates Rd, Alexandra just before midnight on Thursday.

Ravineel Avikash Sharma, 19, an apprentice plumber of Alexandra, was killed when the car he was a front-seat passenger in crashed into a tree in Alexandra just before midnight on Thursday.

Police said alcohol and speed were factors in the "completely preventable" crash.

Millar was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital where he remained in a serious, but stable condition, hospital staff said on Sunday.

The rear-seat passenger received minor injuries in the crash.

Less than two hours before the crash killed Sharma, his father turned up to the garage he was at give him a ride home, but the teenager told him: "Dad, don't worry, I'll be dropped back by friends".

Police inquiries into the crash were continuing.
