Five people, including several school children, have been injured after a van rolled down a bank in North Canterbury.

The van, which was carrying 10 people, rolled off Inland Rd, near Mt Lyford, shortly after 5pm on Friday.

"It was a minibus carrying school children which rolled off a bank," Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman Andrew Norris said.

A St John spokesman said five people were transported to Kaikoura Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

Three people were taken by helicopter, one by road and one by a private helicopter.

*St John previously said there were six people injured. They later revised this to five people injured.
