A slip on the West Coast of the South Island that closed State Highway 6 near Punakaiki has been cleared.

The slip happened about 8pm on Friday on SH6 at Meybille Bay just north of Punakaiki.

About 70 cubic metres of rock and earth fell onto the road and was sluiced away Saturday morning.

A spokeswoman for the NZ Transport Agency said the highway was now open.

While the road was closed, traffic between Westport and Greymouth was detoured through Reefton.
