A man has been remanded in custody after being charged with kidnapping, stealing a car, dangerous driving, and failing to stop for police.

Michael Mamea, 30, whose charging document says he has no fixed abode, allegedly threatened the driver of a car in Hawdon St, Sydenham, on Saturday morning.

Police allege Mamea stole the car, drove it and the owner around the city, then stopped at a petrol station in Opawa where the owner escaped.

The victim alerted police, who pursued the car and stopped it on Mairehau Rd, Shirley. The victim did not know Mamea, but was unharmed.

Mamea was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Monday.

He is next expected to appear by video-link from Christchurch Men's Prison on October 2.
