Fire crews are working to free the person trapped after a truck and trailer unit rolled.

The driver of a truck and trailer unit became trapped after rolling their vehicle north of Kaikoura.

A police spokeswoman said emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 1, about 2km north of the town, at 8.50pm on Tuesday.

It was near where Athelney and Kincaid roads (SH1) intersect with Postmans Rd at a bend.

Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman Riwai Grace said personnel worked to free the driver of the truck.

A St John spokesman said two ambulances and Nelson rescue helicopter were called to the scene.

The driver was freed and transported via helicopter to Christchurch Hospital's emergency department in a serious condition, he said.

The police spokeswoman later said the track had been transporting "crusher material" from a quarry.

Meanwhile, two people were injured, one seriously, in a crash at the intersection of Cowans and Southbridge-Leeston roads, south of Christchurch about 6.15pm on Tuesday.

A St John spokesman said one person was taken to Christchurch with serious injuries. Another person received minor injuries.
