The Kiwa, PrimePort Timaru's new pilot vessel, before it left Australia for South Canterbury. The boat is due in Timaru on Monday.

Timaru's new pilot vessel is on its way to PrimePort Timaru.

The $2.4 million Kiwa is expected at the port at about 10am Monday.

It left Eden, Australia on Monday. It was due to stop at Nelson and Akaroa before Timaru.

The Kiwa will be blessed and lifted for an out of water survey before beginning its work.

The vessel replaces the pilot launch Ohau.

A Timaru Girls' High School class submitted the name in a region-wide competition earlier this year.

In mythology, Kiwa is one of several male divine guardians of the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Ocean is also known as te moana nui a Kiwa, or the great ocean of Kiwa.
