The most overrated tourist attractions in the world
Some travellers are extremely difficult to please.
To many, Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon are awe-inspiring sights. But to others, they are simply "a ton of water" or "a giant hole in the ground".
Reddit asked its users the question: "What's the most overrated tourist attraction in your country?"
These were the highlights (or, erm, lowlights).
GRAND CANYON, ARIZONA, USA
The Grand Canyon is widely considered one of the seven wonders of the natural world, but one Reddit user was left thoroughly unimpressed.
Their review? "It's awesome for the first five minutes. After that it is just a giant hole in the ground."
NIAGARA FALLS, USA-CANADA BORDER
Travellers agreed that apart from the view, the area around the Niagara Falls doesn't have much going for it.
One user said: "By all means, see the falls. They're beautiful. But be warned of the tourist city that surrounds it."
Another said: "I live near Niagara Falls. 'Yep it's a ton of water going from one place to another surrounded by casinos. Awesome'."
PLATFORM 9 3/4, LONDON, ENGLAND
Harry Potter fans might travel across the world for the chance to pose with the Platform 9 3/4 sign at King's Cross Station, but they're wasting their time, according to one visitor.
They warned: "Went back last February and now a photographer takes photos that you can buy like the ones from a rollercoaster. The queue was huge. So was the shop. I was baffled."
MADAME TUSSAUDS, LONDON, ENGLAND
You should feel ashamed of yourself for wanting that fake selfie with the royals.
One user summed it up: "I really can't understand why so many tourists flock to Madame Tussauds. You've come all the way to one of the most vibrant cultural cities in the world, and you're going to spend several hours queueing to see a mannequin dressed like Princess Diana?"
BLARNEY STONE, CORK, IRELAND
According to legend, if you kiss this stone, you will be endowed with the gift of the gab - the ability to talk about any subject in an eloquent manner.
But it's best avoided, one local advised. "It's just a stone and I'm pretty sure it has been peed on a few times."
TIMES SQUARE, NEW YORK, USA
They say Times Square never sleeps, but for some travellers, it was a giant snooze-fest.
One said: "Times Square has to be the lamest thing you can do in NYC. Oh look, a bunch of chain stores, sweet."
OKTOBERFEST, MUNICH, GERMANY
The famed beer festival draws travellers from all over the world, but insiders say it's overpriced and overcrowded.
"The ground is covered in all kinds of bodily fluids and the beer is WAY overpriced," one Reddit user wrote. "Seriously, drive a bit out of Munich, go to a beer garden and enjoy good beer for a good price at a nice place that doesn't smell like the vomit of five continents."
THE LITTLE MERMAID STATUE, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
The statue is based on the fairytale by the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, but a common complaint is that it's too... little.
"People expect something grand and amazing," one user said. "It's literally just a normal statue of a life-sized mermaid."
BRAN CASTLE, ROMANIA
It's known as Dracula's castle, despite author Bram Stoker having never even heard of it. Even so, the road leading to the castle is lined with stalls selling Dracula T-shirts, mugs and fake fangs.
As one user put it: "There're tons of way more impressive castles in Romania yet people go there instead just because 'boo vampires'."
