Glamp up your Kauri Coast holiday
As much as I love escaping into the New Zealand bush, with just me and my tent, as I grow older I've grown to love the comforts of home.
With the growing trend of glamping or "glamorous camping" around the world, I'm happy to exchange my leaky single tent for a luxury canvas tent.
What more could you ask for than being off the grid and comfortable at the same time?
Tucked away on a farm on the Kauri Coast in Northland, Highfield River Retreat is a luxury campsite where you can get away for a couple of days to reset the batteries.
Beside a little river and some amazing totara trees, Highfield away from towns and phone reception, so it's exactly the kind of place to escape to to enjoy being in a beautiful solitude.
The outdoor bath at Highfield River Retreat is definitely a highlight.
Nothing beats a steamy outdoor soak under the stars, surrounded by candles while listening to the river bubbling next to you.
That's until you try to fall asleep and hear kiwi calling in the distance – they are loud, you can't miss them!
Highfield is in the perfect position to holiday along the Kauri Coast.
Two-and-a-half hours from Auckland, and only 20 minutes from the famous Kauri trees and incredible beaches.
There's so much to see and plenty to do in the area, and the forest couldn't be more stunning or lush.
If you do find yourself on the Kauri Coast, it would be rude indeed not to say hello to Tane Mahuta, the oldest and mightiest of the Kauri trees.
New Zealand's largest living Kauri tree, it is a wonder to behold and visiting is quite a powerful experience, and a definite must-do on any trip to Northland.
