Winter at Leh, Kashmir: Situated at 3800 metres above sea level, Leh is very cold place in the winter months. Most of the accommodation options and food outlets are closed in winter and the ground is frozen solid in places. Being one of very few outsiders in town at that period of the year, I was invited into many houses for tea and a chat. The houses are very simple with a heater/cooker in the middle of the space. People were happy to share what little they had in return for a contact with the outside world.

Christchurch-based photographer Giora Dan spent time photographing the landscapes and people of the Himalayas.

His trip took him all the way from Indian Kashmir to Bhutan and Tibet.

Sarangkot: Short of the Himalaya mountains themselves, Sarangkot hill provide the best sunrise view of the Annapurna range. On the way down from the top of the hill I saw these children on the massive swing. It was the village swing and the children were competing as to who could swing the highest.

Ramocha Temple: The vivid colours of Ramocha Temple, in Lhasa, provides an extraordinary back drop for photography. Once in a while, a puff of smoke from the candles and burning incense fills the spaces and create beautiful shafts of lights. It was pure luck that these two worshippers walked through one of these shafts making it appear like they were floating in light.

Tibet Potala Palace, Lhasa: As a traveller, Potala Palace is a place you aspire to visit. It has cultural and political significance and its looms over Lhasa. However, outside the palace walls life is the same as any other city with traffic, markets and social interactions. The contrast is between the two is a rich photographic ground.

Pokhara: Pokhara and Phewa lake are very busy with both tourists and pilgrims. The movement across the lake is done by colourful row boats. The boats make a beautiful display when moored together. Their paint is vivid even before the sun rises.

Debating Monks in Bhutan: Jakar, in Bhutan, has a large Buddhist school. For couple of evenings a week the cadets gather at the school ground in small groups, with a older students standing in the middle of each group. The older students will ask questions in rapid succession, clapping their hands at the end of each question and waiting for a cadet to give an answer. It is all very noisy with roars of laughter erupting as quick question - answer sequences turn faster and faster. Surprisingly, the place and practice are not on the tourist trail and there were about five foreigners that, like me, were intrigued by the noise and found that spectacle.

Darts competition: Apart from the overwhelming deep Buddhist culture of Bhutan, there is the national sport that stands out. It seems that Bhutanese are obsessed with hitting targets from one side of a field to another. It is everywhere. At the lower end of the scale, small children throw small stones at cardboard targets, the next stage sees darts fired at wooden target and at the top of the scale are carbon fibre bows and arrows that are used with unbelievable accuracy.

Dal Lake: Dal lakes early morning floating market starts in the small hours of the morning, well before the sun rises, and it seems that social aspects of the market take prominence over commerce, with slow and long negotiations the norm.
