A passenger on an Air New Zealand flight struck by lightning has described the moment as "something aerophobia nightmares are made of."

The airline confirmed flight NZ433 was turned back to Auckland on Sunday as a "precautionary measure" following a lightning strike shortly after departure.

"When the lightning hit everyone screamed, the light ripped through the aircraft," a passenger on board said.

"The aircraft will undergo standard engineering checks before returning to service," a spokeswoman said.

"Lightning strikes are not uncommon and aircraft are designed with this in mind."

Customers travelling on NZ433 were put on an alternate service, however there was some apprehension from passengers not sure about flying.

"We're feeling that comfortable going back up into that stormy sky."
