The speed cameras will be set up at 33 sites around the country, in an effort by police to drive down speed-related deaths and injuries in the areas.

Speed cameras are set to be installed on seven high risk roads in the Waikato.

Work to install the first poles - that will eventually hold the cameras - began in early September.

The new cams, spanning from Maramarua to Raglan to Waihi, will be thoroughly tested before becoming operational, operations manager road policing, Inspector Peter McKennie, said.

It's part of a nationwide rollout of cameras at 33 sites that aims to drive down speed-related deaths and injuries, police say.

The areas were picked based on analysis by independent traffic experts, McKennie said.

"We know from international experience that safe speed cameras do have an impact on slowing people down, particularly around the sphere of influence of the camera.

"This is why we are working to place safe speed cameras at this and other sites, to encourage people to reduce their mean speeds."

Site works for the 33 sites were announced in May this year, and represent the third phase of the $10 million static camera expansion programme announced in July 2013.

McKennie said the police aren't interested in camera fines.

"We're only interested in the impact the cameras have in encouraging people to slow down to safe and appropriate speeds and get to their destination safely."
