One airlifted to hospital after car hits back of boat being towed in Waikato

Fire crews were called to the crash site on SH27 near Horrell Rd on Sunday (file photo).

One person was flown to hospital after a car struck a boat being towed through the Waikato. 

Emergency services were called to State Highway 27 at Te Puninga, near Morrinsville, around 6pm on Sunday. 

The motor of the boat ploughed through the windscreen of the car when it struck the trailer from behind, a police spokesperson said. 

"One vehicle ran up the back of a boat," Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru said. 

Firefighters from Morrinsville set up a landing site for a rescue helicopter nearby, she said. 

One person was flown to hospital with a suspected broken leg. 

Police are investigating.
