Rotorua shop listed among world's most beautiful
It's a list of the 50 most beautiful, must-visit bookshops in the World - and Rotorua's McLeods Booksellers is on it.
McLeods is the sole New Zealand entrant on the list, compiled by book website bookriot.com.
Manager Michael Byrne said they were surprised and delighted to learn of their inclusion on the list, and that there were a number of aspects he believed led to their placing.
"Like any other retail shop, a good bookshop is one that offers good customer service and its staff are both well informed and have good people skills," he said.
"The rating mentioned 'beautiful' so we also think the shop layout and overall design must appeal too.
"Being a small independent appeals to locals because we belong in the community. Having a wide range of stock to appeal to all tastes is another reason."
Byrne said the listing was also further proof of the enduring appeal of books.
"I wanted to paraphrase Mark Twain. 'Reports of the death of the printed book have been greatly exaggerated'," he said.
"The book remains first choice of gift, both to give and receive. Books are not going anywhere anytime soon."
